  • BasicMed allows some pilots to fly without holding an FAA medical certificate, but only under certain conditions (e.g., no international flights, aircraft under 6,000 lbs, limited passenger count). It requires a valid driver’s license and a physical with a state-licensed physician.

  • The AME will review your MedXPress form, check your vision, hearing, vital signs, and overall health.

  • Yes — with a “Pre-Flight Consultation” you can absolutely consult with an AME before your official medical exam, and in fact, doing so can help you avoid delays or unnecessary complications. A pre-exam consultation allows you to discuss your medical history, current medications, prior surgeries, or any conditions that might impact certification. The AME can guide you on what records or documentation to gather in advance and help identify any potential issues before you submit MedXPress. There is Fee with this service.

  • Not all medical conditions or medications are disqualifying. Bring documentation from your treating physician. Some cases may require deferral to the FAA for further review.

  • Yes. If you don’t meet Class I or II standards, your AME may be able to issue a lower class (e.g., Class III) if you qualify. This often allows pilots to continue flying while addressing medical concerns.

  • Special Issuance allows pilots with certain medical conditions to hold a medical certificate with specific limitations or periodic follow-up. Your AME can help identify whether your condition requires Special Issuance, gather supporting documentation, and coordinate with the FAA to minimize delays.

  • If you’ve undergone surgery or been hospitalized within the past year, you may need to provide operative reports, discharge summaries, and your treating physician’s return-to-duty clearance. Some procedures require a mandatory recovery period or FAA review before clearance.

Medical Certificate Breakdown (Class)

Every year, more than 400,000 pilots undergo FAA medical exams, and more than 90% are cleared on the spot. In fact, nearly half of all U.S. pilots hold a First Class medical certificate, and thousands maintain their flying privileges well into their 60s and beyond.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the average age of pilots holding medical certificates in 2022 was 39.6 years.

Our mission at Fit2Sky is to help you navigate the process confidently, efficiently, and with minimal turbulence.
